The maiko in the picture stands looking at what probably is the Kamo River in Kyoto. She stands on a "noryu yuka," one of the terraces built by restaurants in the hot and sultry summer over the river bank so that people can enjoy the evening breeze.

The long obi like the wings of a butterfly is typical for maiko. The realistic deer woven into it is a rare fashion statement... The photo is probably from the 20s or 30s of the last century.
