For those interested in Japanese literature, the Japan Foundation publishes an excellent quarterly called Japanese Book News. The most recent issue is 58 (December 2008); since issue 43 all magazines are published on the web as PDFs. Issue 58 (which is available if you go to the archive!) also has an article on the Kanikosen boom, the novel about the canned crab factory ship that has become the symbol of Japan’s “new poor.” Unfortunately, looking at the economic downturn, it could sail for some time to come…
