Shanghai popular place to live for Japanese

According to Asahi.com, Shanghai surpassed New York as the overseas city with the largest number of long-term (> 3 months) Japanese residents.
- Shanghai: 47,731 long-term Japanese residents
- New York: 40,068 long-term Japanese residents
But when we look at permanent residents, Los Angeles is no. 1: 61,336, followed by New York (51,705) and then Shanghai (47,794).
On a country-by-country basis, the United States still leads China: 247,771 vs. 126,627.

Interesting statistics. I believe London is up there too with over 40,000
Japanese and a matsuri every summer, though whether that’s permanent or long-term residents I’m not certain… I can certainly see the appeal of Shanghai though

A lot of business between Japan and China and Shanghai is a major business hub so it makes sense. No matter what China or Chinese say about WW II, they like the business and will always welcome Japanese business people.
China is in fast developing, so many Japanese companies have branches here, no wonder their Japanese employees and their family living in Shanghai.
